Prioritising Workplace Wellbeing

At the last Aycliffe Business Park Breakfast Networking event on 18th July, our headline sponsors Rise, took the opportunity to connect with so many local organisations. Helen Selfridge (Director of Commercial, Marketing and Communications) and Cass McGill (Business Development Manager) represented Rise Workplace Wellbeing, with Helen delivering a presentation which started with some fun audience participation in a game of ‘Heads and Tails’ highlighting the inequalities our communities face across the North East and therefore facing our workforces.

Helen talked about the importance of workplace wellbeing and the practical steps employers can take to support their employees. She shared how Rise is leading by example by holding the Better Health at Work Award accreditation at Continuing Excellence level, running several ongoing wellbeing initiatives, and successfully implementing a 4-day working week across the organisation for the last two years. For Rise, it’s been about improving work-life balance, encouraging physical activity, and supporting staff through the cost-of-living crisis – particularly for working parents who may benefit from reduced childcare costs. But other benefits just as compelling included:

  • Lower staff turnover
  • Reduced costs from ill-health absenteeism
  • Decreased presenteeism
  • Increased creativity and productivity

Helen also shared why this work matters. In County Durham, 29.1% of adults are inactive, compared with 25.1% nationally. Firmly believing that addressing workplace wellbeing is one of the most impactful ways we can begin to turn the tide she continued to explain that when employees feel supported and empowered to manage their health, they bring more energy, focus, and resilience to their roles.
